A Brief History<\/h2>\n

The whare, now called T\u0101tai Hono Marae, was built in 1885, initially serving as a temporary church for the congregation of St Paul\u2019s before being gifted in 1898 to become our church hall. Throughout the 1980s, the hall famously hosted weeknight dances, weekend fairs, and Sunday School.<\/p>\n

On 4 July 2009, the building was refurbished and rededicated as a marae and named T\u0101tai Hono, which means \u2018bound together\u2019. The refurbishments included a new entrance whakairo by Bernard Makoare, community tukutuku panels, and paintings by Theresa Reihana.<\/p>\n

The marae is operated by the community of Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori, who function as the haukainga for the space \u2013 offering p\u014dwhiri\/whakatau, catering, karakia, support with tangihanga, etc.<\/p>\n

Main Event\/Dining Space<\/h4>\n

This multi-purpose space can host approximately 200 people standing and 150 seated. Overnight marae-style stays can also be hosted Monday to Saturday.<\/p>\n

Side Meeting Room<\/h4>\n

Located next to the main whare, this smaller meeting room can host around 40 standing and 20 seated. This room is perfect for book clubs, smaller gatherings, etc.<\/p>\n
