An intergenerational community:<\/h2>\n

We are a community that values walking through life together. From newborns to kaumatua-kuia (elders), we gather united each week in worship. It\u2019s not uncommon to have two or three generations of the same wh\u0101nau gathered together in our services.<\/span><\/p>\n

A place of whakapapa:<\/h2>\n

Many of our wh\u0101nau share that what makes our church special is the tradition carried through our whakapapa within Te H\u0101hi Mihingare (The M\u0101ori Anglican Church). Te reo M\u0101ori is the primary language of our services (with English translation provided to be inclusive for all).<\/p>\n

The history and whakapapa of our karakia and hymns are rich, with some dating back to the second century (such as the Apostles\u2019 Creed).<\/p>\n

A community responsive to the call for social justice:<\/h2>\n

We have a long history of engaging with social justice and believe we are called to be a prophetic voice within our communities, nation and world. Some of the movements we’ve been involved with include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

– 1980s<\/strong>: Hosting the Women’s Advisory Committee (a leading voice and action group for women\u2019s affairs) in our on-site marae, T\u0101tai Hono.<\/p>\n

– 1981<\/strong>: Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori being the gathering and starting point for Auckland\u2019s Springbok Tour Protest (challenging South Africa\u2019s apartheid policies).<\/p>\n

– 1982<\/strong>: T\u0101tai Hono Marae being the base for the Pacific Peace Hui – Te Reo Oranga o te Moananui a Kiwa (an anti-nuclear movement led by Pasifika people).<\/p>\n

– 1984<\/strong>: Members of Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori joining \u2018Te Hikoi ki Waitangi\u2019 (a protest movement challenging breaches to Te Tiriti).<\/p>\n

– 2015<\/strong>: Partnering with Te Puni K\u014dkiri to provide lunches to our homeless wh\u0101nau of T\u0101maki Makaurau.<\/p>\n

– 2017<\/strong>: Hosted ‘Operation SOS’ (the Redeemed Motorcycle Club doing outreach in Dargaville and Kaikohe<\/span>).<\/p>\n

– 2024<\/strong>: T\u0101tai Hono Marae being the starting point for the Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage; and giving voice against the Treaty Principles Bill by joining the ‘H\u012bkoi m\u014d te Tiriti,’ and submitting as an organisation to the Select Committee.<\/p>\n

Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori is a community of Mihingare (M\u0101ori Anglicans) based in the heart of Auckland\u2019s CBD. We are a diverse mix of cultures \u2014 M\u0101ori, P\u0101keh\u0101, Asian, and Tauiwi (non-M\u0101ori) \u2014 who find a home in a M\u0101ori expression of Christian worship.<\/p>\n

Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori is a parish (community) within Te P\u012bhopatanga o Te Tai Tokerau<\/a> – the northern (Auckland\/Northland) Bishopric (Diocese) of the M\u0101ori Anglican church. We are blessed to be under the leadership of our Bishop – P\u012bhopa Te Kitohi Pikaahu<\/a>, and Archdeacons Venerable Katene Eruera & Venerable Mark Barnard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parish Boundaries<\/h2>\n

Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori are the kaitiaki of M\u0101ori Anglican worship and mission, stretching as far north as Dargaville, and as far south as Onehunga. We host weekly services in Central Auckland at Te Ana Tapu (Church of the Holy Sepulchre)<\/a> and in West Auckland at H\u0113mi Tapu<\/a>. We also support the leadership of services in Waiuku, and on the North Shore.<\/p>\n

Our community is led by our Missioner (Priest-in-charge), the Reverend Shona Pink-Martin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During the rededication of Holy Sepulchre as the site for the Auckland M\u0101ori Mission, the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka <\/a>(first M\u0101ori Missioner of T\u0101maki Makaurau) shared, \u201cThe M\u0101ori is a social being. His life is community life. He is gregarious, and grouping is to him the very blood of life. Because the M\u0101ori is a community being, isolation is to him most forlorn and totally frustrating.\u201d This was one of the main reasons why the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka established the Auckland M\u0101ori Mission.<\/p>\n

In response to the diversity of M\u0101ori in Auckland, the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka used a dual approach to foster belonging at the mission. On the micro level, each person\u2019s story and whakapapa was welcomed and celebrated as a unique expression of themselves in a pan-tribal melting pot. However, on the macro level, the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka promoted a different kind of belonging \u2013 ki te wh\u0101nau a te Karaiti (to the family of Christ).<\/p>\n

Another key concept that the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka used to foster belonging at the mission was the notion of \u2018he t\u016brangawaewae hou.\u2019 Translating as \u2018a standing place,\u2019 t\u016brangawaewae generally means a \u201cplace of belonging where you draw your strength from.\u201d Traditionally, this standing place would have been one\u2019s ancestral papa k\u0101inga, surrounded by wh\u0101nau and hap\u016b. However, the reality for many M\u0101ori post-urbanisation is that they are either disconnected from their papa k\u0101inga, or must travel long distances to get there. Therefore, \u2018he t\u016brangawaewae hou\u2019 suggests that urban M\u0101ori in T\u0101maki Makaurau can find a \u2018new\u2019 place to stand within the Auckland M\u0101ori Mission.<\/p>\n

Further, a \u2018t\u016brangawaewae hou\u2019 does not mean that M\u0101ori must disconnect from their ancestral homelands in order to find belonging at the mission. Instead, the mission acts as \u2018he k\u0101inga tuarua\u2019 \u2013 a second home. This is reminiscent of the whakatauk\u012b, \u2018Ka mate k\u0101inga tahi, ka ora k\u0101inga rua \u2013 when one dwelling place declines, a second one will emerge to take its place.\u2019<\/p>\n

Further, in relation to the notion of \u2018k\u0101inga tahi,\u2019 reconnecting with and remaining connected to ancestral places must remain of vital importance to urban M\u0101ori. Given that M\u0101ori are not homogenous, the transmission of specific m\u0101tauranga-\u0101-iwi, p\u016br\u0101kau-\u0101-iwi, and reo-\u0101-iwi is significant.<\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”A Place of Fostering M\u0101ori Identity:” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n

T\u0101tai Hono Marae continues to be a place of great significance for fostering M\u0101ori identity. In his commentary about Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori, Lloyd Ashton (Media Officer \u2013 Anglican Church of Aotearoa) shares that, \u201cWhile the work of prayer, worship and spiritual regeneration was happening in the whare karakia\u2026 in the wharenui, the work of cultural restoration, by means of hui and cultural events, was going on, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

There has been a strong commitment to the utilisation, celebration, and revitalisation of te reo M\u0101ori in the history of the M\u0101ori mission. As recently as 2017, Reverend Tony Brooking (the then Missioner) led weekly Tuesday night bible study and te reo M\u0101ori classes from T\u0101tai Hono. Combining both a passion for scripture and te reo M\u0101ori, Brooking deemed it vital that the mission be upskilling its members in both areas.<\/p>\n

A final clear example of Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori fostering M\u0101ori identity is in the formation and longevity of the Auckland Anglican M\u0101ori Club \u2013 colloquially known as the \u2018Angies.\u2019 You can read more about them here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During the rededication of Holy Sepulchre in 1969, the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka<\/a> (the first M\u0101ori Missioner of T\u0101maki Makaurau) said, \u201cRealising that M\u0101ori life is community life, it should be easy to understand the spontaneous and abundant nature of M\u0101ori hospitality. True-to-type M\u0101ori don\u2019t live entirely for themselves nor yet, even in a primary way, to promote the advantage of their individual family, but to seek for the welfare of the whole tribe.\u201d Given the inherent focus within te ao M\u0101ori on hospitality and communal welfare, combined with Christian missiology, Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori feels theologically and culturally mandated to be a missionally-minded organisation.<\/p>\n

A key missional aspect of the Auckland M\u0101ori Mission has been in social justice and protest. In 1986, Reverend Maori Marsden<\/a> was interviewed by the New Zealand Herald during his appointment as Auckland M\u0101ori Missioner. In the interview, Marsden shared that a major focus for his role was considering sociological issues like, \u201cWhy are there so many M\u0101ori in prison? When we ask these questions, we look for the cause \u2013 is it moral or social? Is sin more deeply rooted in the M\u0101ori than in P\u0101keh\u0101? Well, I can\u2019t accept that my people are more evil than the P\u0101keh\u0101, so it must be the social causes. And that social cause is bound up in the Education Department, in fact, all the government departments operating on the European value system and taking no account of the inherent values within M\u0101ori culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Missionally responding to these issues, in conjunction with Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori, Reverend Maori Marsden<\/a> ran marae-based w\u0101nanga to support rangatahi to learn about their whakapapa, te reo M\u0101ori, and creative arts (carving, pottery, and weaving). Rev\u2019d M\u0101ori Marsden\u2019s mission was to, \u201cteach young M\u0101ori new skills and show that the street did not have to be their refuge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the first Sunday service on 17 August 1969, Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori has been offering weekly Mihingare-style karakia, intentionally utilising te reo M\u0101ori as the kauwaka (sacred vessel) of their faith expression. Similarly, since 11 February 1973, Te M\u012bhana M\u0101ori has also been offering Kura R\u0101tapu (Sunday School)<\/a> for the spiritual development of our tamariki.<\/p>\n

During the rededication of Holy Sepulchre in 1969, the Venerable Sir K\u012bngi \u012ahaka<\/a><\/span> (the first M\u0101ori Missioner of T\u0101maki Makaurau) shared that, \u201cThe history of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the history of the clergy, the men and women, boys and girls, who, both within and without the sturdy kauri walls of this Church, by their lives and witness, have published the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, far and wide.\u201d<\/p>\n
