Angies

Auckland Anglican Māori Club

Founded in 1967 by the late Venerable Sir Kīngi Matutaera Īhaka, the Auckland Anglican Māori Club (The Angies) is the oldest surviving haka group in Auckland. Each Thursday evening, the group gathers at Tātai Hono Marae for practices, training for social competitions, and supporting various kaupapa.

Anyone is welcome to join, regardless of rohe, whakapono, or whakapapa. As Matua Atene Andrews shares, “We’ve got some very fair-skinned performers with us, and they’re younger. So, as much as we enjoy being old folks getting back together and the baby boomer generation, there are some young people who find companionship and whakawhanaungatanga with us oldies.”

If you are keen to get connected, the group’s leader – Matua John Tapene, can be reached at: office@temihana.org.nz.

I have been an intermittent member of Angie’s since 1976-straight out of Tipene-St Stephens’ School. Each time upon my return over some 48 years, the Angie’s Mihinare whanaungatanga of aroha and manaaki has been ever present. I know I receive far more than I could ever give back. Te Wero o Te Whakapono!
