Tātai Hono Marae

He Paku Hītori

The whare, now called Tātai Hono Marae, was built in 1885, initially serving as a temporary church for the congregation of St Paul’s before being gifted in 1898 to become our church hall. Throughout the 1980s, the hall famously hosted weeknight dances, weekend fairs, and Sunday School.

On 4 July 2009, the building was refurbished and rededicated as a marae and named Tātai Hono, which means ‘bound together’. The refurbishments included a new entrance whakairo by Bernard Makoare, community tukutuku panels, and paintings by Theresa Reihana.

The marae is operated by the community of Te Mīhana Māori, who function as the haukainga for the space – offering pōwhiri/whakatau, catering, karakia, support with tangihanga, etc.
